San Diego Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steven Cohen is recognized as one of the top Plastic Surgeons in America by Castle Connolly and Best Doctors, Inc.
Dr. Steven Cohen received his Plastic Surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He went on to complete a fellowship in Craniofacial and Facial Plastic Surgery with Dr. Henry Kawamoto at UCLA. Dr. Steven Cohen specializes in cosmetic and craniofacial surgery and brings a wealth of experience as well as a professional artistic eye to his work.
From 1990 to 1993, Dr. Steven Cohen directed the Craniofacial Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. From 1993 to 1999, he was Co-Director of the Center for Craniofacial Disorders at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and a partner of Dr. Carl Hartramph of Atlanta Plastic Surgery, the father of modern day breast reconstruction. In 1999, Dr. Steven Cohen became the Chief of Craniofacial Surgery and Surgical Director of the Craniofacial Center at Children’s Hospital of San Diego and founded FACESplusTM. Dr. Steven Cohen is involved in the Plastic Surgical Training program at the University of California, San Diego, where he serves as Clinical Professor and helps direct the Rady Children’s Hospital and UCSD Fresh Start Craniofacial Fellowship. In 2001, Dr. Steven Cohen was selected as Teacher of the Year by the plastic surgery residents.

Dr. Steven Cohen has written over 150 articles for the medical literature and served on the editorial board of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, the Annals of Plastic Surgery, and the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal. For six of the past seven years, Dr. Steven Cohen has been named by his peers as one of the Best Plastic Surgeons as reported in San Diego Magazine. Previously, he had been recognized by the Atlanta Journal and Constitution as one of the Best Plastic Surgeons in Atlanta. He was cited in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 as one of the nation’s Top Doctors by Best Doctors, Inc. and in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 by Castle Connolly as one of the Top Doctors in America. In addition, he has been voted by his peers as one of the “Top Doctors” in San Diego 8 out of last 10 years. Dr. Cohen was recently voted by the San Diego Union-Tribune Readers Poll as “San Diego’s Best” Cosmetic Surgeon in 2008.
Dr. Steven Cohen is an elected member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. which elects as members “individuals in virtually every profession that has anything to do with scholarship, creative genius or intellectual distinction.”
Dr. Steven Cohen is known throughout the world for his contributions in the treatment of children with facial deformities. He is the inventor of one of the first internal distraction systems, the MID system, and holds a patent on the Macropore biodegradable distraction device. He helped develop a number of other new surgical techniques in conjunction with Macropore Biosurgery, Inc. and Stryker Leibinger, Inc. He was formerly on the executive boards of the American Society of Craniofacial Surgery, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association.
Dr. Steven Cohen has been an invited speaker throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia and is an honorary member of the Royal College of Australian Surgeons. He has been an invited surgeon to a number of centers, including Johns Hopkins, Stanford and UCSF to demonstrate and teach surgical techniques.
Dr. Steven Cohen devotes a significant amount of his time to taking care of children with facial deformities such as cleft lip and serious craniofacial skeletal malformations. Dr. Steven Cohen and his wife are involved with a number of charities, including Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, where he has served on the Advisory Board and received the 2004 Founder’s Award for his work on children. Dr. Steven Cohen and his wife, Sheri, also support the Contemporary Museum of Art in La Jolla and are helping to lead a fundraising campaign to benefit the Center for Neuro-Craniofacial Surgery at Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego.
Dr. Cohen has been selected by his peers as one of San Diego’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence in the field of Plastic Surgery seven out of the last nine years. Dr. Steven Cohen was also selected by Castle Connolly as one of the Top Doctors in America, an honor bestowed on less than 1% of physicians. In addition, Dr. Cohen was voted by San Diego Union-Tribune Readers Poll “San Diego Best 2008 Cosmetic Surgeon” and selected by Ranch & Coast Magazine as their readers’ best cosmetic surgeon of 2009. Fresh Start Surgical Gifts named Dr. Cohen as “Outstanding Surgeon of the Year 2009” for his work with children and adults with severe craniofacial disorders. Dr. Cohen was also selected as one of the Top Plastic Surgeons in America for 2011, by US News and World Report and Castle Connolly. He was chosen as 2011 Teacher of the Year, University of California, San Diego, Division of Plastic Surgery.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Steven Cohen is a painter and sculptor, whose work is in a number of private collections and galleries. He lives in La Jolla, California with Sheri and their three children, Joshua, Hannah and Kate, and enjoys swimming, hiking and the outdoors. He is a regular in the mornings at Pannikin’s coffee house.
