KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug available that contours and improves the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness, often referred to as a “double chin.” Submental fullness is a common, yet under-treated aesthetic condition that is often resistant to diet and exercise alone and influenced by several factors, including aging, genetics and weight gain.
KYBELLA™ is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” KYBELLA™ is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
Each in-office treatment session with KYBELLA™ is typically 15-20 minutes. The desired treatment zone is outlined and cleaned. A series of small injections will then be administered into the treatment area. Discomfort with KYBELLA™ injections is mild and can be further diminished with ice and over-the-counter ibuprofen or Tylenol.
The results from KYBELLA™ occur gradually and improvement will be seen over the course of several weeks to months.
KYBELLA™ can certainly be used in conjunction with other procedures to help you achieve an optimal aesthetic outcome. Depending on your needs, combination with skin tightening procedures, such as ThermiRF and Ultherapy or laser treatments like Laser Genesis or Fraxel may be extremely beneficial. These treatments would not be performed at the same time as your KYBELLA™ injections. However, KYBELLA™ can be administered at the same visit as BOTOX and injectable fillers. Discussion about the ideal treatment plan for you should take place at your consultation appointment with Dr. Cohen or Dr. Leong.
For most patients, downtime is minimal and there are no major activity restriction following KYBELLA™ treatments. Many patients describe swelling and a sensation of “fullness or heaviness” in the neck area for a few days following a KYBELLA™ treatment.
