Liposuction for the jawline and neck is a procedure that can help improve these areas’ appearance. A double chin or sagging neck may be due to fat accumulation in the neck and chin area. The cause of fat deposits in these areas may be heredity, due to weight gain, or because of the natural aging process. These traits are often resistant to weight loss and exercise. Facial liposuction involves the removal of specific areas of localized fat deposits in the neck and jaw area. It is performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately one hour. Facial liposuction can help to restore a more youthful appearance.

About The Changing Face
Neck rejuvenation is one of the most sought-after procedures to restore the contours of the face. It makes sense since the jawline and neck are often one of the first things people notice when they look at someone. These areas can be a source of insecurity for many people. Patients may dislike how their face seems to be sinking due to the formation of jowls around the jawline, and no matter how hard they work out, they can’t seem to change the fat that has gathered on the neck and under the chin.
In addition, we often associate a sleek, contoured neck and jawline with youth and vitality, so the opposite can inspire insecurity, especially if the patient is younger than these characteristics suggest. In fact, in a clinical study, neck ptosis and jowls were the first two characteristics people associated with an aged face.
How Do I Get Rid of Stubborn Fat on My Face and Neck?
As we age, it’s not uncommon to start seeing changes in the face. Many patients complain that their face seems to be sinking, especially around the jawline, where jowls begin to form; this can be due to several factors, including weight gain, hormonal changes, genetics, and the natural aging process. Additionally, the double chin and neck rolls can create the illusion that the patient is perhaps unhealthy when the opposite is true.
Under the surface, our tissue is going through significant changes:
- The skin becomes thinner and less elastic
- Fat pads start to shift
- Bone resorption occurs
All of these changes can lead to a sagging face and neck with unsightly pockets of fat. This fat is not affected by diet or exercise because it’s not the same type of fat that accumulates elsewhere in the body. Even if you are maintaining or have lost weight, you may still notice these changes in your face.
Liposuction can help improve these areas’ appearance by reducing the amount of fat present, which can help to give the face and neck a more defined and youthful appearance. Patients who hate the sight of their aging face and neck will love their results with liposuction.
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that we perform right in our state-of-the-art facility. In addition, the process only requires local anesthesia, so there is no need for general anesthesia or a hospital stay. And, liposuction has changed significantly in recent years because science has helped to develop new technologies and techniques.
A tumescent fluid is used with standard liposuction to help minimize bruising and swelling. This fluid also helps numb the area so patients can remain comfortable during the procedure; this has made liposuction a safe, comfortable, and effective option for many people who want to improve their appearance without surgery.
VASER Hi-Def Liposuction
One of the most significant advances in modern liposuction is adding VASER technology, or Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. VASER lipo uses ultrasound frequencies imperceptible by the human ear. The waves safely break apart fatty tissue for improved removal.
Dr. Cohen will determine which method of liposuction is suitable for you!
Candidates for Liposuction
The best candidates for liposuction are:
- In good physical health
- At a stable weight
- Realistic in their expectations
Patients should also have pockets of fat resistant to diet and exercise.

Preparation for Liposuction
Because liposuction for the jawline and neck is a minimally invasive procedure, the prep is relatively straightforward.
- First, Dr. Cohen asks that you stop taking blood thinners or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, for two weeks before your procedure to minimize the risk of bruising and swelling.
- We also ask that you avoid sun exposure for two weeks before and after your procedure. The sun can cause the treated area to become irritated and can increase the risk of infection.
- On the day of your procedure, arrive with a face free from makeup, lotions, and oils.
We will give you specific instructions on preparing for your procedure and tailor them to your needs and your lifestyle.
What to Expect During Liposuction
Dr. Cohen performs liposuction for the jawline and neck using a small, handheld device called a cannula. A cannula is a thin, hollow, needle-like device connected to a suction tube. Dr. Cohen will insert the cannula through a small incision in the skin. Once the cannula is in place, Dr. Cohen will carefully and gently move it back and forth to break up the fat cells. With VASER Lipo, the ultrasound waves will break up the fat. The fat cells are then suctioned out of the body through the cannula, never to be heard from again. That’s right! Liposuction is permanent!
Liposuction for the jawline and neck is an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. The session usually takes around an hour, although the length will ultimately depend on the extent of treatment and if any additional treatments or procedures have been scheduled simultaneously.
Recovery from Liposuction
After your procedure, you will be given specific instructions on caring for your small incisions and what to expect as you recover. You must follow these instructions closely to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.
You can expect some bruising, swelling, and soreness in the days following treatment. You will also likely have some numbness in the treatment area. These are all expected side effects that will subside on their own. To help with the bruising and swelling, we recommend that you sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights and apply ice to the area for 20 minutes at a time. Never apply ice directly to the skin; instead, wrap it in a thin towel.
You can return to your normal activities within a few days, but you should avoid strenuous activity that elevates your heart rate for at least two weeks.
Results from Liposuction
You will begin to see the results of your procedure almost immediately. However, it can take up to six months for the full effects to be visible.
The results of your procedure are long-lasting, but it is vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle to ensure that your results last.
You will likely experience the best effects of any cosmetic procedure: a confidence boost. So get ready for the compliments about your appearance to start rolling in!
